Estación Biológica el Banco, Pacific Coast, Guatemala
The Station Story
Estación Biológica el Banco was created in 2017 by Asociación Fundaselva de Guatemala and Indigo Expeditions as a joint conservation venture, initially designed to protect sea turtles and their natural habitats.
Inspired by the dedicated sea turtle conservation work that was already being carried out by the community of el Banco, the station provides support for their work at the Tortugario el Banco as well as providing a base for international ecotourism and conservation projects.
Tortugario el banco
For over 25 years, the community of el Banco has been protecting one of the most important nesting beaches for olive ridley sea turtles on the Pacific Coast of Guatemala.
Patrolling beaches and rescuing eggs once they have been laid, has enabled them to incubate the eggs in turtle hatcheries known as locally as ‘tortugarios’.
The sea turtle hatchlings are then released into the ocean, giving them a fighting chance of survival to secure the future of sea turtle populations.
